I think it dumps to the desktop by default. i added ability to go up to 10 bytes per packet as some ECU's support that (results in faster dump). depending on pc, it should take about 4 minutes for a standard dump (32KB from 8000 to FFFF).

So this is mostly fixed in v2.08 with some improvements to how the displays handle these ZD30's not communicating randomly, that it will often finally connect without user interaction... eventually :) (but much better than in the past).

connecting should be much more predictable and consistent now and automatically retry for some period rather than locking up the display. Also allows menu buttons to be pressed to bypass connection (which on some vehicles you couldnt even get into the menus to do this).

Peter

change notes:

1. minor changes to visual connection indication etc on startup (showing firmware version etc)
2. will connect at your selected speed from options (9404/9600/9804) 3 attempts first, then 1 of both other alternatives. so if you select 9404 it will do 9404,9404,9404,9600,9804 and repeat until it connects. Mostly leaving at 9600 is best.
3. will attempt connecting for 60s then go to main menu. also pressing the menu/enter button will skip it to main menu if its not able to connect (without waiting 60s).
4. few changes to a couple timings/delays/etc to hope to make it a bit better...

Description: I use ECU adapter based on BlueTooth serial port device. So, my PDA isn't connected by wire to ECU. I'd use my PDA as trip computer to measure fuel consumption etc. But ECUtalk dont restore connection to ECU after ignition off/on. Sometimes it restores connection, but sometimes dont.

Steps To Reproduce: Connect to ECU, display gauges, watch them. Turn ignition off, after a fiew seconds (5-15) turn it back ON. ECUtalk restores connection to BT serial port, connects to ECU and gauges become "alive" - all works good. Do you have a normal setup (no bluetooth) that you can test this restore functionality with? Is there any way of ensuring that your bluetooth module is 'awake' when you turn it back on?

I havent come across any cases where it doesnt reconnect.

I think ECUTalk assumes the com port is still active, so maybe if turning the PDA forcibly closes the com port after some time, the connection is lost

Hello, Peter.
I made some tests. First of all I wrote ECU emulator for PC.
My PDA with ECUtalk establish Bluetooth serial port connection to PC, and starts working. In GAUGE mode ECUtalk sends some request, but my emul dont't answer. So, I can watch connection requests. If I terminate BT connection and start it after a fiew seconds, PDA with ECUtalk establish BT connection and starts sending init requests. All works. But if I wait 1 minute, BT serial connection can't be established.

I tried to run ECUtalk on another laptop with BT. All works fine - after a long pause BT serial connection is established and ECUtalk starts send Init requests again.

I think, that trouble is in WinMobile or in .Net CF (serial port)

Can you send me part of source code, that retrys open COM port? I want to try fixig this bug.

can you try v1.4.0 beta:
http://www.ecutalk.com/downloads/ECUTalk_v1.4.0_beta.exe

it requires the .net compact framework 2.0 installed on the device:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=aea55f2f-07b5-4a8c-8a44-b4e1b196d5c0&displaylang=en

if the same problems happen in that, then ill wait till i change it to close/reopen the port on reconnects (which I want to do anyway) and see if that makes a difference. my guess is probabaly the BT port is being removed/reinitialised or similar.

Hello, Peter.

Another note:

ECUTalk works on my PDA, it connects by BT to PC.
ECUTalk work fine with reconnection after program start (autoconnect to port or manual connection).
If I dont run my ECU emulator, ECUTalk open BT serial port, makes init request and closes COM port. And it repeat this action every 5 seconds. So,If I switch off BT on my PC, PDA may be try to open COM port. When I turn BT ON in my PC, com port connection is good, ECUTalk trys reconnecting (open COM port, send request and close COM port). When I start emulator, ECUTalk starts working.
Beta version is not tested yet, I'll try it some later.
p.s. Thanks for link!

Hello, Peter.

I returned to beta-testig your ECUtalk.
Problem with reconnect is exist :( 1.4.0 beta dont reconnect at all. It doesn't reopen COM port.

I have some remarks for Beta version
1. Gauges looks much better than earlier ! This is realy nice!
2. Using PDA (winmo, 6.1, HTC Touch diamond 2),elements of main window are close each other than in previuos versions. I think that it's neccecery increase X positions and Y position of each checkBox and Label and ComboBox in 2 times. The same for window size in mobile version
3. I think, that on RPM gauge (on the round scale) it'w worth to write "1", "2", "3" instead of "1000", "2000", "3000".
4. Is it possible to set up Injector size manually by typing value in TextBox for calibrating "Fuel Used" gauge?

So, if you want, I'm ready to beta test your program.

Ilya.

are you saying the beta doesnt try reconnection but v1.3.5 did? can you attach picture/screenshot of the layout showing how close the labels are? I dont think I changed this, maybe it is due to .net 2.0 or your PDA.

yes, probably worth changing to 1, 2, 3 etc on gauges, although i may have set it up so the value shown in logs is same as on the gauges so may not be an easy change.

you can set injector size manually by editing the ini file. there is no typing in the dropdown as it makes it very hard for people not using a stylus etc to have to click the arrow...and i think there was some other problem with it which meant it had to be disabled in .net 1.1, maybe it doesnt need to anymore, not sure.

Hello.
As I wrote, v1.3.5 try to reconnect for a fiew seconds after ingnition OFF. Aftert some minutes v1.3.5. stops trying reconnect. V1.4.0 doesn't reconnect at all :(

I write about "1", "2", "3" written on foreground of RPM gauge, current value of RPM should be full (IMHO)
I attached screenshots of v1.4.0. So you can see how labels are close each other.
Regards, Ilya.

Summary: Fuel metering attempt for RD28/TD27 with CSPS
Description: So some of the diesels have a control sleeve position sensor (CSPS) with voltage range 0-5.1v, with effective range 0.4v to around 3.5v (but we will use 0.4v->5.1v, and cap any values below 0.4v to 0.4v, then scale/offset to bring to a 0-100% range (irrelevant whether the top end is 3.5 or 5.1v, as this will only affect the input injector value.

So the CSPS value is essentially the equivalent of injector duty cycle %.

Fuel(L) increase since last calc = seconds since last calc * number of cylinders injecting in full revolution * injector rate in L per second * percent of injector rate the injectors were open for

petrol = deltaS * (CYL/2) * (INJCC/60000) * (injPulseWidth/periodOfRPM);
diesel = deltaS * (CYL/2) * (INJCC/60000) * ((CSPS-0.4)/5.1)

So, it seems like diesel fuel usage would not change with any change in RPM, since the CSPS is the true 'usage' indicator, and CSPS of 2v indicates same fuel usage regardless of engine being at 1000rpm or 4000pm?

Summary: Estimated range suggestion for trip meter
Description: The idea was thrown around that it would be good for the user to be able to input their fuel tank volume and have the display give an estimated range based on current fuel consumption.

With the unit tracking fuel usage, the following may be able to be applied to calculate an estimated range;

(fuel tank volume - fuel used) / current consumption = estimated range

This option would require a 'reset' for when the user refills their tank.

The 'current consumption' would have to be measured over a given distance, either one kilometer or one mile depending on the users settings.

An example:
tank volume = 65L
fuel used = 20L
current consumption = 0.15L / KM

(65 - 20) / 0.15 = 300KM range

As you stated earlier Peter, this option would probably require a message letting the user know that these are estimates only and they should not be relied upon.

would this be current consumption as in using instant economy, or the current trip's economy? (or the long term economy of all trips)?

I'd personally go with instant economy so I can see estimated range based on current driving behavior at any given throttle position.

i'd go with current trip economy

otherwise its going to be all over the place

i think the reset option would have to be easier to access tho
(0000124)
Peter
2011-01-18 21:06
as for where the tank range should go on the screen, I think the LPH/GPH reading on the trip screens are probably the least useful, so trip and all trips screen could get 'Rng' range estimate (i dont think there is any use for instant estimate for most people).

you only need to reset your trip when you fill up right? so its not that frequent that where it is, is too hard to do?

pipster11

will have a look whether they can be shuffled around, as yes you're probably going to use clear trip more often than other ones (which likely only set once, or only after firmware upgrades)

Summary: provide minimum log update functionality
Description: now this might have to be how many packets are logged out of all possible ones, rather than a given rate. e.g. if we were to specify log no more often than once every 100ms, we might get 2 packets together then skip one, etc, so the data wouldnt have consistent gaps between it.

so may be better to specify how many packets are not logged between each that is. e.g. 0 = all logged, 1 = 50% logged, 2 = 33% logged, 3 = 25% logged, 4 = 20% logged, etc.

not the most easy thing to convey to users, but most accurate way to not record all data.

Summary: Request that in future revisions that TP logging be included as a log/gauge
Description: we spoke about this and you seemed to have a solid understanding on the possibility of tackling this issue. i am posting what you said as a refresher to help you come to a solution.

----------------(me)
Did you program ecutalk? Would it be difficult to add tp to it? Have you never seen value in adding it? These are not demands or "fix it" statements, just merely conversation.

----------------(you)
yes i did write it, it probably wouldnt be too difficult to add it, though im not familiar with the calculations etc for it. no one has asked for it so far.

you can add request for it in bug tracker under consult software menu section on website. if you have any info on how its calculated could add that also. as far as im aware its just a read rom/ram command (C9) for specific addresses, and then some calculation is performed on the data to give some value (i havent done any tuning myself)

----------------(you)
yeah i could enter the feature in the tracker (mainly to remind me when i work on software next to look into it). but id just need the info to do it. i.e. the common addresses for fuel/ignition (can probably get em from datascan), and the calculation, and maybe it involves reading some part of ROM to get fuel/ignition maps?

basically if ive got all information needed to do it, then i could probably make it a gauge and allow it to be logged (is this all thats needed, the actual TP value, and you just log RPM and whatever else seperately (injector pulsewidth or AFM or whatever other axis is)?

----------------(me)
yes exactly. kinda like a nissan boost sensor. because we all know nissan doesnt use boost sensors.

in v1.3.5 beta3 and above 'proper' diesel support has been added - diesel specific sensors and error codes. error codes dont clear the same way they do on petrol ecu so its normal to get the response saying they werent cleared (so i changed this to say either they werent cleared, or they came back straight away, or its a diesel ecu so u should get fault codes again and see if they were cleared).

Screen can change colour, or a audible sound is heard when a predetermined value is exceeded. Little code required, would be very useful and add value to the product.

For example:
The Pocket PC can then be used as a shift light; alarm when injectors are maxed out (100%DC); over heating; a fault code is triggered.

will create a seperate ticket for just identifying a sdcard etc for next firmware, so users can test out their cards (and for the early displays, their missing resistor fix for microsd card usage)

You may need to introduce some kind of wear-levelling algorithm to any task that frequently writes to the SD in order to reduce likelihood of premature card failure.
(0000081)
BensDR30
2009-06-28 18:40
This is applicable to 0000074 as well (it seems that you've got it covered via using eeprom/nvram for trip data though)
(0000083)
Peter
2009-06-28 18:44
i think its the responsibility of the sd card's controller to implement wear levelling - most datasheets do mention that that is a job it does. but i do need wear levelling for the bits of onboard eeprom that will be written to a lot storing current trip data for the other save trip data feature
(0000094)
BensDR30
2010-01-26 23:15
Perhaps only saving the SD-data when the neutral switch is triggered could be an option?
(0000095)
Peter
2010-01-26 23:44
the wear levelling is all sorted for trip meter (saves every 10s, may increase this to 15s if i need to save more stuff like SD card position) so nothing really tricky there, although i may write info to start of card routinely showing where its up to, etc rather than using eeprom. either way it shouldnt be too much of a problem, the actual writing to sd card itself and compability with all cards etc is whats left.

when i first fixed this issue, i thought that ECU reported a primary bank but the reading was always zero - actually what happened is that it wasnt reported at all, there was only the secondary bank available. so when i first fixed it, i put in a 'disable bank1' option in the injector setup - but ill leave it in, in case 300zx/gtr etc users with 2 banks, would rather just use the secondary one and not display the primary one.

unfortunately the ECU doesnt get a boost pressure reading. same with oil pressure, oil temperature. those are the 3 things people will typically require external gauges for.

Summary: adjustments of fuel/ignition
Description: consult active tests allow adjustments of fuel and ignition timing (across the rev range). possibly we can either have this activated when chosen just on the adjustment screen, or to also activate it whenever the display is on main display - effectively allowing u to change ignition timing without adjusting distributor etc.

however, not 100% as to how effective this is (e.g. will fuel adjustment be 'learned around' for cruise and/or load conditions), whether it works under all circumstances or is only in affect for some of the time. perhaps until this is determined should only work whilst on the screen?

If you were able to have the system apply tuning parameters to the ECU on power up, then you have effectively made a tunable ECU. This could be a little out of the realm of the display unit to manage, but storage / application of maps via the SD would be a BIG feature.
(0000082)
Peter
2009-06-28 18:42
the main limitation to this would be the time it takes to 'switch' between different adjustments. so a single adjustment across the board would be fine, but as you increase the frequency of these boundary changes (which may take at least 10ms to maybe 100ms to switch between). but its definitely a possibility, even if its just a small amount of regions. the onboard eeprom could probably store the adjustment points (sdcard wouldnt be fast or reliable enough to), so there would be another limitation against doing too many adjustment points if it cannot all be stored in eeprom.
(0000086)
Peter
2009-09-04 11:23
this is just for allowing adjustment while on adjustments screen - in future firmware the adjustments may be applied whilst on the main display, once theres a bit more evidence that the adjustments work as intended etc (just to make sure i havent made any mistakes or whatever). theres also a limit of +/-20% fuel (and 10 or 20 ignition timing, forget) in this firmware (this can be increased in future)

Peter

these are the example categories ive got so far. obviously the actual value would be adjustable, more just showing the sensors i think would be useful to have an alert for. speed and temp probably worthwhile for initial buzz then periodic, but perhaps the others would want just a buzz whilever its true?

Speed >= 115
Temp >= 105
RPM >= 6000
Injectors >= 95%
AFM >= 4.9v

Its planned that the internal EEPROM would store the trip information, as the SD card is planned for general logging (also, not everyong will use the sd card). even if it was stored on the sd card, the display would have to know where on the card to look for it (and that location would need to be stored in the eeprom). the problem is just not knowing when the car will be turned off, and hence not knowing when to write the data (and it cant be written too often because the eeprom has limited write cycles).

so this is essentially a duplicate of 0000074

the very first display i made back in 2005 or so, had automatic toggle and it was extremely annoying, because when you wanted something specific it was annoying to wait for it. perhaps a better thing would be a hybrid of the 2 screens? i.e. the most important data from both screens?

e.g. i like current speed, temperature, timing, current/avg fuel economy, time elapsed, and maybe fuel used or O2 sensor

will check it out, might even be able to manually set the refresh rate in ms (ie might not have to be an even divisor of 1s which would limit it to 1s, 0.5s, 0.25s, 0.2s, etc). either way we can this refresh option to LCD options under contrast/backlight

fixed in upcoming v2.01. use can select refresh time from 40->250 in 10 increments. e.g. 50 = 50ms between each line refresh (4 lines, so 200ms effective refresh rate for a given line, to update 5 times per second). so then 250ms x 4 = 1s is the slowest update rate, which may be preferred for blue screen users. this setting will only affect the main displays (sensor and trip meter) and the time trial running screen.

Description: While viewing the maximum values menu, they are not updated (or don't seem to be unless its a very long refresh time).

This could be "as designed" (i would assume) but would be nice if they were updated once every 5 seconds or so. Especially useful when tacking maximum speed, maximum rpm or max temp on race track while driving without having to toggle to that menu manually.

this is how the display is designed - whenever you are not on the 'main display' page (either trip meter or sensors) then it is not reading from the ECU. so whenever you are in menus etc, trip meter stats, sensors etc arent being read.

this is because you have a lot of other accesses to consult (such as error codes, time trials, etc), and its too difficult in the current setup (think single threadded/sequential code execution) to continually process consult data whilst on other 'blocking' code like waiting for a button to be pressed or similar is occuring.

not that it would be impossible to do, but likely to generate more issues than the small advantage it would give.

if you're interested in knowing in realtime whether a value is being hit or similar, then perhaps audible alerts (when theyre implemented) may help...e.g. if you want to know when you hit 7000rpm or 100C water temp or 110km/h or whatever. these would then also only be monitored whilst on main display

yeah, i think this is because the application (being made for as early as pocket pc 2000) isnt aware of landscape/portrait, therefore when the res isnt 240(wide) by 320(high) then the stuff behind the gauges (which is causing the scrollbars) is going to mess things up.

not sure if i can get this fixed before the .net 2.0 version (which will probably be the next one after 1.3.4, not sure)

Summary: fuel usage (and maybe others) dont take into account hibernate/car off times for fuel usage calcs
Description: seems there is no check in the fuel usage calc to take into account when car isnt running/turned off. so when u start car again, the next fuel usage calc uses the total time elapsed since car was off and the gauge will spike up to a high value and stay there (as if car was "running" the whole time it was off).

from a user:
Basically I have a laptop running in the car and when the engine is turned off it switches to laptop battery and then hibernates in 5 minutes.
When the car is restarted , I have to push a button on the console to wake the computer.

What has been happening is that after I stop the car and leave it, say, arrive at work and come back in the arvo to drive home, all indicators work fine but the fuel used indicates 60L where as when I shut off the car in the morning it indicated 2L.
It seems something is still causing the software to count fuel used?

done, user runs program on pc, chooses port that the usb/serial device is on, then chooses upgrade file (which would be hosted on ecutalk site), hits program, then popup will say you need to power off device, at this point user goes to options->upgfw on the display, and resets it there. programming will begin once reset.

should they corrupt the upgrade, shorting two of the pins at top of display (once any enclosure is removed) will reset it (you can turn power off/on because by the time the usb/serial com port reappears in PC it will be too late to start upgrade as the main display will have started)

probably not really an ecutalk feature, if anything was done for analysing logfiles etc it would probably be done inside ecutalk rather than in excel. im sure there are other generic tools/macros etc out there for excel that could be used?

i just do manual graphing in excel as it depends what im anaylsing as to what data and ranges are important (ie it would be hard to automate as its often something particular im after)

hard drive spin down shouldnt matter - if your logging then it wont spin down as it hasnt been idle.

as for others, will have to check if there is any control over that, especially being generic to both pc/pocket pc

unfortunately there is no way to stop the ecu going into safe mode - it does that when one of the primary sensors arent working, and does so for safety (if it didnt, then you could do damage to the engine until the sensor that isnt working is fixed).

also look into when and how often flush is used. maybe this has something to do with it

now an option so user can change flush wait time. this is time after "stop streaming data" command sent to ecu before it checks for reply. if it checks too early, then the response might not have been received (and therefore missed). if it checks too late, im not sure if this matters, but it will make everything slower (especially startup detection of gauges). default is 100ms (same as beta3)

Summary: Option dropdown lists are editable on laptop/PC (shouldn't be)
Description: As the .NET Compact Framework dropdown combobox class doesnt have an option for the type of drop down list (eg whether you can type into the list), the default one is a non-editable list. however the default one on the .NET Framework (for laptop/pc) is an editable dropdown. Since it cant be changed as there is no option for .NET CF, something has to be done to make sure its not editable on normal .NET Framework. I think checking platform then using reflection to change dropdown style to list would probably work.

done now, in options->other, sets the priority of the gauges/logging thread to whatever you set there. so normally, you would probably set it to "lowest" or below normal if you have other programs running that need cpu time.

im not sure if below normal/above normal work on win98/me, so anyone using that should stick to normal/lowest/highest

will be in v1.3.3_beta3

implemented pending testing it works properly. these 3 sensors max out all available room for cars that support all sensors (eg 300zx/gtr might), but i think thats ok since there wont be any new sensors for a while (until switches/registers are supported)

initial v1.3.3 beta release had two major issues when used on a pocket pc (laptop was fine), the first was the name of the sensors was not shown for distance/fuel used, the second was that ecutalk would exit if you choose either of these and displayed the gauges. both issues were caused by lack of support for the inline ternary operator:
(condition ? truevalue : falsevalue)

eg for setting distance sensor name:
(Settings.Imperial ? "Mi" : "KM")

the latest v1.3.3 beta 2 posted on news page has these issues fixed

Have had one report of hx4700 not showing dutycycle, l/100km with v1.3.3 beta

Have had one report of Orange SPV M2000 only showing a few random sensors in v1.2. Running same thing on a laptop or iPAQ worked every time. Id just put this one down to a dodgy serial driver on the actual Pocket PC?

I haven't been able to reproduce any of these issues or find a possible reason for them, so I'm hoping maybe the upgrade to .NET 2.0 (with its native serial port implementation) may help things.

Summary: Define interface to allow anyone to create their own custom gauges
Description: With the use of a public interface, along with some method of compilation and use of a class definition that implements the interface, people could create their own custom gauges.

Steps To Reproduce:
Additional Information: Perhaps provide a bar graph or the on/off switches as a "gauge" implementation to provide an example to anyone who wants to create their own. Also the implications of it being either .NET Framework (wont work on Pocket PC) or just

Bar graphs would be awesome, and would be a much more efficient way of displaying info.

at this point i think bar graphs would be the easiest/simplest demonstration of the custom gauge interface, to show people what needs to be done to write their own etc - so ill probably do that.

Summary: Automatically attempt reconnection to ECU after connection lost
Description: Particularly important for Pocket PC users, when you turn the car off, then back on again, you need to click on the gauges to exit out of them, then re-select the COMx port dropdown list to re-initiate the connection to the ECU. This is the case even if auto connect option is selected (which only auto connects on program start, not on disconnection).

Need to have it so ECUTalk will automatically retry connection whenever it is lost.

when 5 seconds elapses since last data was received, ecutalk will start attempting to reconnect (whilst the gauges are still shown, ie in the background). so as soon as the connection is set back up (ie car started, consult cable plugged back in, etc), the gauges will start responding.

so, if you set up your pda so that it turns off after 30s when on battery power, then when your car turns off, the connection is lost, ecutalk will start to retry connection...then pda will be turned off, until you start car again, once pda turns back on it will reconnect and continue showing gauges/logging.

Description: Perhaps have ability to turn on some form of logging mode that will write out all transmitted/received data to log to help in identifying issues.

Would also be useful to be able to send/receive data directly, though most users wont know how to use this so not too important.

Summary: Continually monitor fault codes (rather than having to keep retrieving them).
Description: When on the fault code screen, selecting read fault codes should allow continual monitoring of fault codes (or at least a secondary option to allow such), which would disable other inputs (eg cant switch back to another tab like setup/gauges) until you "stop" reading fault codes.
Tags:
Steps To Reproduce:
Additional Information: In terms of performance, the UI should only be updated with new/different fault codes if they are not the same as previous - rewriting the same fault code to the screen continually may lag behind how often fault codes can be read from the ECU.
